Wikipedia. La brecha profunda. Parte 1 / Wikipedia. The deep gap. Part 1
Wikipedia parece estar haciendo un gran esfuerzo para disminuir las brechas de género. Sin embargo, algunas brechas son mucho más profundas y estructurales. Mi experiencia al intentar ser mujer escribiendo sobre mujeres.
Me consta que hace años wikipedia y wikipedistas hablan sobre las brechas de género y realizan campañas y activismo para que más mujeres estén en wikipedia. No solo que se escriba sobre ellas, sino que sean mujeres escribiendo sobre mujeres, porque hay una diferencia abismal entre entradas sobre mujeres escritas por hombres, y aquellas escritas por mujeres o editadas en campañas para visibilizar la desigualdad en el trato de género. Yo no me ocuparé de escribir sobre esto, hay grupos de investigación que se ocupan ya.
Hace un tiempo vi unos tuits de @hiperterminal, en el que hablaba de la necesidad de que más mujeres escriban sobre mujeres. El comenzó una serie de entradas en wikipedia sobre bibliotecarias y yo pensé… y bueno, quizás pueda aportar un granito de arena. Yo también publiqué un tuit en el que invitaba a mujeres que quisieran sumarse a editar conmigo, sin tiempo ni presiones, a aprender juntas. Pasaron cosas interesantes:
- Varias mujeres me respondieron que se sumarían, pero no sabían como. Con algunas conversé en privado. Muchas ocupaciones, problemas y poco tiempo.
- Algunas organizaciones respondieron que querían sumarse… otras quisieron dar un taller. No paso nada. Creo que en ocasiones, la institucionalización de necesidades urgentes son más un problema que una solución. Finalmente la sinergia no ocurrió.
- COVID-19. No vale decir nada más. Aunque muchos pongan en un trono a las tecnologías en estos momentos, creo que no sobra el tiempo. El teletrabajo, la vida personal y la situación psicosocial que involucran temas tan complejos como este, no pueden caer en el facilismo de decir; “bueno, ahora podemos conectarnos más fácil”. No. No es más fácil. Está probado.
A veces el avance de una meta queda en las buenas intenciones de un enunciado. Yo creo que para avanzar hay que hacer, mucho o poco, a los saltos o tropiezos, pero hay que hacer. La buena voluntad tiene que llegar al punto de hacer mover un pie detrás del otro para considerar que uno, aunque sea en círculos, hace camino. Los primeros pasos siempre serán un avance. El resto será tiempo, como con el COVID-19, para aplanar la curva.
Refloté mi usuario en wikipedia y pregunté a @hiperterminal sobre qué mujer me recomendaría escribir. Me dijo que sería interesante que lo hiciera sobre Donna Scheeder, así que tomé unos días para realizar una búsqueda de información y localizar alguna imagen de licencia que permita su uso. Mientras tanto, algunas personas amigas me facilitaron materiales de estudio. Tutoriales, guías, cursos, videos... No puedo explicar la cantidad de información que me dieron. Gracias por eso! Lo mismo en wikipedia, hay mucha información. Mucha, mucha, mucha. Les desafío a que intenten explorar cómo editar contenidos. Aquí el valor de nuestra profesión toma gran relevancia. No importa cuanta información des. Importa que respondas a la necesidad que se plantea. Harto hablamos sobre “el mar de la información” y yo… me ahogué.

Wikipedia. The deep gap. Part 1
Wikipedia seems to be making a great effort to decrease gender gaps. However, some gaps appear much deeper and more structural. My experience trying to be a woman writing about women.
I know that wikipedia and wikipedians have been talking about gender gaps for years and campaigning for more women to be on wikipedia. Not only do they write about them, but they are women writing about women, because there is an abysmal difference between posts about women written by men, and those written by women or edited in campaigns to make gender inequality visible. I will not deal with writing about this, there are research groups that are already concerned.
A while ago I saw a few tweets from @hiperterminal, in which he spoke of the need for more women to write about women. He started a series of wikipedia posts on librarians and I thought… well, maybe I can contribute a grain of sand. I also published a tweet in which I invited women who wanted to join me to edit, without time or pressure, to learn together. Interesting things happened:
- Several women replied that they would join, but did not know how. I chatted privately with some of them. Many occupations, problems and little time.
- Some organizations replied that they wanted to join … others wanted to give a workshop. Nothing happened. I think that sometimes the institutionalization of urgent needs is more of a problem than a solution. Finally the synergy did not occur.
- COVID-19. It is not worth saying anything else. Although many put technologies on the throne right now, I think there is no time to spare. Teleworking, personal life and the psychosocial situation that involve issues as complex as this, cannot fall into the ease of saying; “Well, now we can connect more easily.” No. It is not easier. It is proven.
Sometimes the advancement of a goal is in the good intentions of a statement. I think that in order to move forward, you have to do a lot or a little to jump or stumble, but you have to do it. Goodwill has to get to the point of moving one foot behind the other to consider that one, even in circles, is making way. The first steps will always be an advance. The rest will be time, as with the COVID-19, to flatten the curve.
I refloated my user on wikipedia and asked @hiperterminal which woman she would recommend me to write about. He told me that it would be interesting if he did it on Donna Scheeder, so I took a few days to search for information and locate some license image that would allow its use. Meanwhile, some friendly people provided me with study materials. Tutorials, guides, courses, videos … I cannot explain the amount of information they gave me. Thanks for that! The same on wikipedia, there is a lot of information. Much, much, much. I challenge you to try to explore how to edit content. Here the value of our profession takes on great relevance. It doesn’t matter how much information you give. It is important that you respond to the need that arises. We talked a lot about “the sea of information” and I … drowned.
